  • Biography

Neil Smith is in his third year as a Visiting Fellow at the ANU. Mr Smith convenes and lectures Policing and regulation and regulatory theory (including prudential regulation). Neil also supports the teaching of Criminology and the Australian Criminal Justice System at the ANU. Mr Smith supervises in Honours and leads research into missing persons, working with the AFP National Missing Persons Coordination Centre, the NSW Missing Persons Registry, and the ACT Police Missing Persons Unit.

Neil also undertakes several philanthropic roles including Board Member (elected) of Rowing ACT, the Rowing ACT representative on the Rowing Australia Masters Commission and volunteer Company Secretary for the Canberra Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation.

In 2021 Mr Smith was awarded a Secretary's Award from Dr Kennedy, Secretary of the Treasury for professional, resilient collaboration across Treasury and the Australian Public Service.

In his public service career Mr Smith developed an expertise in the prudential regulation of private health insurance, life insurance and general insurance. Including as Special Counsel of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority and General Counsel of the then Private Health Insurance Administration Council.

Mr Smith enjoys volunteering and seeking to help those in need. Including as a mentor and as a rowing coach (juniors, masters, high performance and those with special needs).
